UK HOLDS COVID-19 BRIEFING: Interior Minister Priti Patel hosts the UK government’s weekly COVID-19 briefing at Downing Street where she will likely discuss the enforcement of rules and restrictions throughout the United Kingdom. As the 7-day case average and deaths from the virus both continue to climb in the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said earlier today that it is ‘too early to say when we’ll be able to lift some of the restrictions.’ When asked directly if lockdown could extend into the summer, a spokesperson for the prime minister couldn’t give a definitive answer. ‘It remains our position that we want to ease restrictions as soon as it is safe to do so,’ the spokesperson said, according to The Guardian, ‘but in order for us to do that we need to see the transmission rates of the virus come down and we need to see the pressure on the NHS reduce.’

Patel will be joined by Martin Hewitt, the chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, and Dr. Vin Diwaker, NHS England regional medical director for London.
