The US House of Representatives has passed a bill calling for sanctions against senior Chinese officials who are deemed responsible for their involvement in mass internment camps in Xinjiang. The bill approved on December 3, 2019, is a revamped version of the act passed by the US Senate in September. Targeted officials would be banned from the US and their US-based assets would also be seized. The camps in China’s western Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region reportedly are holding some 1 million Uygurs and members of other largely Muslim ethnic minority groups.Beijing, which insists the camps are “vocational training centres”, has threatened to respond to Washington’s move, and accuses the US of discrediting China’s “efforts to fight against extremism and terrorism in the region”.
