US Vice-President Kamala Harris completed her week-long visit to Southeast Asia on August 26, 2021. Travelling to Singapore and Vietnam, Harris sought to strengthen US bilateral ties to counter China’s rising influence in the Indo-Pacific. On the South China Sea dispute, Harris made clear that the US is keen to keep the area free and open. She said that while the US welcomes stiff competition, it does not seek conflict, and supports peace and stability. Other issues discussed in meetings with her counterparts include human rights, restrictions on political activism, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the situation in Afghanistan after its fall to the Taliban amid the US troop withdrawal.
