HAPPENING NOW—WHITE HOUSE PRESS BRIEFING: White House press secretary Jen Psaki holds a press briefing. As the United States remains in a public health and economic crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic, Americans across the country are looking to the federal government for further relief. Later today, Pres. Biden will be meeting with GOP senators who want him to sign onto their bipartisan coronavirus relief package rather than push forward with his proposed $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief plan. The GOP’s scaled back $618 billion plan is less than half of Biden’s, does not allocate any funds for state and local governments, and calls for smaller direct payments to less Americans.

Biden’s plan, titled the American Rescue Plan, includes $400 billion for increased testing, contact tracing, and a national vaccination program; $1,400 direct stimulus checks to Americans, which would supplement the $600 checks Congress has already passed to bring the total to $2,000 per eligible adult; and roughly $350 billion in emergency funding for state and local governments.
