1 IN EVERY 1,000 AMERICANS HAVE DIED OF COVID-19: Officials from the World Health Organization hold a briefing to discuss the latest developments in the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Since March, more than 19 million Americans have been infected in the U.S. and at least 333,140 have died; one in every 1,000 Americans has now died of COVID-19. U.S. health officials have warned that the new variant of coronavirus first reported in the United Kingdom is ‘likely’ already spreading within the country. Dr. Anthony Fauci of NIH told CNN Sunday that the U.S. is taking this new strain ‘very seriously’ and supported the idea of making all travelers coming from the UK to take a COVID-19 test before boarding a plane. Adm. Brett Giroir echoed Fauci’s remarks on ABC News Monday morning, saying ‘we don't have proof that it's here, but we do suspect that it is likely here, given the global interconnectedness.’ WHO officials have also discussed their plans to look into this new strain to see if its transmission rates are higher. So far, they have not found it to be more deadly.
