Kaavan, ‘the world’s loneliest elephant’, got to meet another of his kind for the first time in 8 years after arriving at a sanctuary in Cambodia. The two were introduced through a fence, where they touched trunks. Kaavan, a 36-year-old male elephant, was recently rescued from a zoo in Pakistan where he had been living alone in subpar conditions since his partner’s death in 2012.

His rescue marks the culmination of years of efforts by various animal rescue orgs, as well as singer Cher. Once Kaavan has had more time to adjust to his new home in Cambodia, he will be introduced to more elephants.
