Chinese President Xi Jinping held a virtual meeting with Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam on January 27, 2021, to hear her annual work report. Xi said he was “very concerned and worried” about the city’s fourth wave of coronavirus infections and pledged Beijing’s utmost efforts to help fight the pandemic in the Chinese Special Administrative Region. During the online meeting, Xi also hailed Lam for restoring stability over the past year. It was the first time since 1997 that a Hong Kong’s leader had not travelled to Beijing for such a duty visit.
